The history of marketing
Marketing is actually an ancient concept. You may have seen films that are based in ancient Greece or Rome with images displayed of bustling market stalls and traders actively engaged in business like communications. Whilst the traders most likely did not refer to their actions as being marketing, the way in which they were operating and communicating was in fact marketing.
The concept of marketing that we now see has more to do with developments during the industrial revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries. This was a period of rapid social change driven by technological and scientific innovation. One result was that for the first time the production of goods was separated from their consumption. Mass production, developing transport infrastructure and growing mass media meant that producers needed to, and could develop more sophisticated ways of managing the distribution of goods.
Since the 1960s, most markets have become very saturated. This therefore means that there is now an increasingly intense competition for customers. The sophistication of marketing management has changed and developed into what we now see in a modern marketing department. Marketers are involved at a strategic level within the organisation and therefore inform an organisation about what should be produced, where it should be sold, how much should be charged for it and how it should be communicated to consumers. Modern marketers tend to conduct research upon markets and consumers. Modern marketers (me and you) are particularly interested in brands. They are also increasingly interested in ensuring that their staff and employees fully understand marketing, for example: ensuring that everyone within the organisation involves themselves with marketing activities.
The use of SEO
SEO is a new type of digital marketing which business owners with webpages are becoming more aware of. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation, so this is where you try to make a search engine work in your favour. For instance, we as search engine users do not look further than the first page of the search engine results, therefore it is vitally important for a business’ website to be displayed on the first page of search results and even better if your website’s link is displayed as one of the first search results listed. Influencer marketing is effective because influencers and celebrities tend to have millions of followers on social media, so millions of people will be looking at the promoted content and some may even be swayed to purchase the product due to the influence.

Digital marketing has become more popular than traditional marketing because, we are able to use digital marketing from the comfort of our own homes, meaning you no longer have to go to the effort of producing posters and flyers and going out your way to deliver them to numerous people. Most types of digital marketing are free, well the initial use anyway, meaning that if you engage within digital marketing you are unlikely to lose money through this form of marketing a lot of it can be done for free.
Social media has also enabled lots of brand owners to use their social media accounts to express their brands and encourage others to purchase items for the brand and as we are becoming glued to social media, this type of digital marketing has been known to be highly effective for increasing sales and revenue within a business.
Be open minded
