Taking Care of Feet If You Have Diabetes

December 11, 2019 by Theo Leave a Comment

If you happen to have diabetes, two of the things that you should look out for are your nails and feet. Your nails give you protection against injuries or minor accidents. If you have diabetes, you have a higher chance of developing neuropathy in the future. It means that there is a possibility that you will not feel any sensation in your feet.

Having diabetes means that you need to take extra care of your nails. You have to watch out for small cuts or cracks that could develop into something more severe like ulcers and cellulitis. Once the condition worsens due to lack of oxygen and poor circulation, it could lead to amputation. Do not wait for this to happen; so take the initiative in seeking treatment for fungal nail infection and taking extra good care of your nails and feet. Here are some essential tips worth remembering.

See a doctor regularly

When you have diabetes, you need to take good care of your body. You need to visit your doctor at least once every quarter to have your feet checked regularly. If you notice any callous, bunion or even a cracked portion on your skin, make sure to have it checked right away. Watch out for sores, blisters or any open wound and seek professional help right away.

Avoid pedicures

You may fancy going to the salon for your bi-monthly pedicure sessions. But if you have high blood sugar levels, it is precarious to have this kind of procedure done to your nails. There is a possibility that your feet could get damaged due to hard-to-remove dry skin and ingrown nails. It would be best to have it done by a podiatrist.

Practice clean hygiene

Always remember to keep your feet clean and dry. Wash your feet with warm water and mild antibacterial soap, and wipe them with a clean towel including the areas between your toes. Avoid moisture from getting into your feet because it may cause athlete’s foot and other types of fungal infections.

Wear comfortable footwear

Badly-fitting shoes or footwear can give you more significant problems in the future. You can either wear breathable shoes made from mesh material or prescription shoes to protect your feet at all times. Avoid wearing heels and stilettos that can put a lot of strain on your feet and cause painful blisters. It is best to consult your doctor to ensure that you are buying the right kind of shoes.

Quit smoking

Smoking is bad for your health, but if you have diabetes, there are more reasons for you to quit. One of the long term effects of smoking cigarettes is it damages your small blood vessels. It affects the circulation of blood in your lower extremities, thus making it more difficult for any wounds to heal.

If you have diabetes, it means that you have to be more careful with your feet and legs. Also, make it a habit to trim your nails regularly as part of good hygiene.
